Behind The Pose - Ustrasana
Fun fact about camels: they have a double layer of eyelashes to project them from the harsh desert sun and blowing sand (we could use that here in Hawaiʻi!) The truth is, camels are well suited for survival in some of the worldʻs most challenging environments. Ustrasana, the pose of the camel, is one that asks you to tap into your reserves when the going gets tough.
One mythological interpretation of Ustrasana is associated with Lord Shiva, who is a principal deity in Hinduism. According to legend, when Shiva's consort, Parvati, was distraught over a particular situation, she sought solace and guidance from him. In response, Lord Shiva imparted the wisdom of yoga, teaching Parvati various postures to help her find inner strength and balance.
Among the postures taught by Lord Shiva was Ustrasana, which symbolized the qualities of resilience and endurance needed to navigate life's challenges. The posture's arching back and heart-opening stance are said to represent the unyielding spirit of the camel, capable of traversing harsh terrains with grace and determination.
