What do the dots mean?
Have you noticed that some people have colored dots placed at the top of their mats during classes? If youʻre new to the studio, you might not know where they came from or what they mean.
The colored dots that students place at the top of their mats lets the teacher know whether or not you want hands-on adjustments during class. The dots live in a cup near the props so you can grab one when you grab your props.
If you place the dot with the yellow side facing up it means "YES PLEASE"
If you place the dot with the red side facing up, it means "NO THANKS"
We always want YOU to be in control of whether or not you receive touch from the teacher. You can flip your dot at any point during class so your teacher knows what your choice is. NO DOT = NO ADJUSTMENTS. If you forget or choose not to grab your dot for the day, your teacher will take that to mean "no, thank you."
We will never ask you WHY you chose red or yellow. We know itʻs a personal choice that may change day to day for many reasons. You are always 100% in choice about it.
AND please understand that sometimes teachers forget to check for the dots, or they canʻt see them because theyʻre hidden beneath props or a foot. Please give us grace in those moments when we get it wrong.
