Behind The Pose - MATSYASANA

Fish Pose, Matsyasana in Sanskrit, is a backbend with fascinating mythological origin. The story is linked to the great sage Matsya, who plays a significant role in Hindu mythology.

According to Hindu mythology, the god Vishnu once took the form of a fish, Matsya, to save the ancient scriptures known as the Vedas. The demon Hayagriva had stolen these sacred texts and hidden them in the cosmic ocean. To protect the knowledge within the Vedas and restore cosmic order, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a fish. As Matsya, Vishnu guided a boat containing the sage Manu, the Seven Sages, and one of each animal species to safety, rescuing them from a catastrophic flood. During this journey, he also imparted spiritual wisdom and knowledge to the sage Manu, ensuring the continuity of divine teachings. Fish Pose, or Matsyasana, is said to mimic the form of the fish Matsya, creating a curve that resembles the body of a fish swimming in water.

🐟Just as Matsya protected the sages and the Vedas, Fish Pose is considered a protective and supportive posture. It opens the heart and throat chakras, creating a sense of vulnerability and surrender. It can also be supported by blocks or therapy balls to mimic the support that Matsya offered.

📚 The myth of Matsya emphasizes the preservation of divine knowledge. Practicing Fish Pose is seen as a way to connect with the divine and tap into the vast reservoir of spiritual insights.

Fish Pose, with its mythological roots, invites you to embody the spirit of Matsya, symbolizing protection and knowledge. As you explore this pose, consider the profound connection between body, mythology, and the wisdom embedded in yoga.
