Program Curriculum

These are a few of the things you’ll discover during our nine-month teacher training program.

  • The foundation of all teacher training is in the philosophy behind it. Our training includes in-depth philosophical discussions of several notable yogic texts as well as the history of yoga in the west and the yoga lineage taught in the teacher training.

  • Graduate with a thorough understanding of anatomy and movement so you can confidently support your students through injuries and know when to modify for specific contraindications, body types and abilities.

  • We will explore specific techniques to amplify your teaching skills such as assisting, sequencing, theming, voice, and more.

  • Trauma will be in the room in your classes, we want you to know how to give your students personal agency so they feel safe in your classes.

  • Although yoga is a practice that comes from India, we live in Hawaii nei. It’s important that we learn about and perpetuate the richness in our host culture, so it is woven throughout our teacher training program.

  • We are passionate about diversifying yoga. Knowledge is power and representation matters. Workshops on equity and inclusion in yoga are part of every teacher training program.

Some prior experience with yoga is required - whether that is a home or studio practice, or maybe you just watched a few yoga videos back in the 90’s (we are right there with you). What is most important is a commitment to yourself, an open mind, and a desire to learn.

Your teachers are here for you.

Rebecca DiLiberto is the lead trainer in our yoga teacher training program and is joined by several other teachers who are experts in their subject areas. You will have access to the teaching team throughout the program and for guidance as you take the seat of the teacher yourself.

 FAQs

  • You will learn both hatha and vinyasa style yoga in our teacher training in the lineage of Anusara and Jivamukti as they were taught to Rebecca by her teachers Marni Task, Amy Ippoliti and the myriad other teachers she’s learned from over the years.

  • Upon completion of your graduation requirements, you will receive a certificate that qualifies you to teach yoga in a group or private setting.

  • Many people take teacher training programs for reasons other than becoming a teacher - your reasons are yours alone. As long as you complete all the graduation requirements you will be certified to teach, whether or not you use the certification is up to you. You can also learn from the program without completing all the requirements required to become certified (i.e. you’d prefer not to take the seat of the teacher in front of your fellow TT’s), however you choose to approach the program is okay.

  • No. Wahi Ho’ōla has chosen not to register as a yoga school with Yoga Alliance for various reasons, one of which is because we have never experienced a yoga teacher being turned down from a teaching job because they were not registered through Yoga Alliance. While Yoga Alliance sets sound guidelines for teacher trainings, many of which we adhere to, we do not believe in their for-profit registration model for teachers and schools and don’t believe it benefits the yoga community as a whole in any tangible way. We are happy to discuss this in more depth with you if it is of concern. Please reach out to info@wahihoola.yoga.

  • The size of the teacher training group will be no more than 20 people, but may be smaller depending on interest.

  • All of our program instructors have been in at least one 200-hour teacher training of their own, but many have attending multiple 200-hour trainings, and several also have 300-hour advanced trainings under their belts. They all are have trained extensively in the specific skill they are teaching during the training.

  • Meals are not provided during the teacher training weekends. Please come prepared with a lunch and snacks. We will generally take an hour for lunch, so you may have time to go out to get lunch. We sometimes have potluck once or twice during the training, but you will be notified in advance of that.

  • We do not provide accommodation for out-of-town participants, however, we would be happy to assist you in finding a place to stay while you are here. Please reach out to us if you need assistance on this front.

Please be aware that since this is a 9-month program, it can become pricey to travel to Maui once a month to attend TT weekends, and there is no online option. Take this into consideration when choosing your teacher training program.

  • Yes, please share your limitation in your application so we can understand and work with you to accommodate your needs. Keep in mind, our studio is unfortunately NOT wheelchair accessible. Let us know if you need assistance climbing stairs.

  • Please apply by August 25, 2023.

  • If a student must cancel prior to the start of the training, they are entitled to a full refund, less the $250 deposit/registration fee. No refunds will be given once the training begins.

  • Yes. However, it might not be the best choice to attend while pregnant if your due date will interfere with your attendance in the program. We want you to be able to spend time with your new family member and not have to take time away from them for teacher training - but we do have an attendance policy that must be met if you intend to get your certificate. Please consider this when deciding if this is the best time for you to do a yoga teacher training program.

  • You are permitted to miss 2 days of teacher training without having to make up your hours. If you need to make up classroom hours, you will have to schedule and pay for a private session with your teacher at their private session rate.

  • Yes, you will have ample opportunities to teach during the program, both to your fellow TTs and to the larger community under the supervision of a certified teacher.

  • We are always here after graduation and beyond to support you in your teaching endeavors. The best way to get comfortable teaching is to teach… a lot. The teachers leading the program have plenty of teaching experience to help guide your way and we are happy to offer space at the studio for you to offer community classes if that is a route you choose to go. Remember that graduating from our program does not mean that you will be teaching at Wahi Ho’ōla. If you would like to teach at the studio after the training, get in touch with us! We would be happy to demo you!
